El Dorado County — Aug. 21, 2025

El Dorado County prosecutors secured a four-year state prison sentence for Joe Peterson after he pleaded guilty to taking a vehicle without consent and admitted a prior strike, stemming from a February 19 traffic stop in El Dorado Hills that uncovered a stolen trailer and utility task vehicle (UTV), according to the District Attorney’s Office. The sentence was imposed on August 15 in El Dorado County Superior Court. Prosecutors said Peterson initially claimed he bought the items for $7,000 but later admitted the UTV was stolen and said both items were being delivered as collateral for a loan.

Deputies reported the UTV’s ignition was damaged and that Peterson carried falsified transfer paperwork; a search of the Cadillac Escalade revealed methamphetamine pipes that Peterson admitted were his, the DA’s Office said. The victim told investigators the trailer (valued at $8,000) and UTV (valued at $25,000) were stolen the previous day from her Sacramento storage unit, and surveillance video captured a black Escalade removing the property.

Peterson applied for mental-health diversion, but prosecutors opposed the request and the court denied it, according to the DA’s Office. “Thanks to the strong investigative work of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and prosecution by Deputy District Attorney Yvan Flores, Peterson has been held accountable,” the office said in a statement.
