By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (April 3, 2025) — EMERALD BAY STATE PARK, Calif. — Vikingsholm, the historic 1929 Scandinavian-style mansion nestled in Emerald Bay, is set to undergo significant restoration this summer. Despite the construction, the site will remain open for public tours, according to California State Parks officials.

The restoration focuses on two primary projects: stabilizing the chimneys and repairing the Morning Room. The chimneys will undergo brick restoration, repainting, and flashing replacement. The Morning Room suffered damage during a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in May 2021 and will be repaired to restore its structural integrity.

“Certain areas surrounding Vikingsholm will be closed due to the repair work, but the building will remain open for tours,”

state parks officials confirmed. Tours are scheduled to begin on Memorial Day weekend and will run through late September.

Visitors should note that access to Vikingsholm requires a steep one-mile hike from the Highway 89 parking lot. While the mansion’s grounds are open year-round, winter visits can be challenging due to cold and icy conditions.

The restoration work is expected to be completed by fall. For more information on tours and the restoration project, visitors can refer to the Sierra State Parks Foundation
