Placerville, Calif. — July 2, 2025 —
In a somber turn of events ahead of Independence Day, organizers of El Dorado County’s Family Blast have announced the cancellation of this year’s fireworks display following a tragic explosion that destroyed their supplier’s entire inventory.

The blast occurred Monday evening at a warehouse in Esparto, Yolo County, where Devastating Pyrotechnics, the longtime fireworks vendor for the Family Blast, stored their materials. Authorities confirmed multiple fatalities and said the explosion decimated all stock intended for this week’s planned shows throughout Northern California.

“This is not just a professional loss; it’s a human one,” the event organizers said in a public statement Tuesday. “Our thoughts and prayers extend to Devastating Pyrotechnics over this unimaginable loss of life and their business.”

The Family Blast, traditionally held at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, draws thousands of residents and visitors each July 4. The decision to cancel, though heartbreaking, was made out of respect for the tragedy and safety concerns, organizers said.

Emergency services responded to the Esparto warehouse shortly after 6:45 p.m. Monday, where the fireball was visible for miles and prompted evacuation orders in nearby areas. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Yolo County Fire Marshal’s Office and Cal/OSHA, as fireworks manufacturing and storage involve high-risk materials.

Despite the cancellation of the fireworks, Placerville Speedway will proceed with scheduled racing events on July 4 and 5, offering local residents an opportunity to gather and celebrate community spirit.

“The track will be lit up in a different way this year,” said Speedway spokesperson Tom Wills. “While we’ll miss the fireworks, the roar of the engines will carry the tradition forward.”

As of Wednesday, no alternate fireworks vendor had been secured, and officials stressed that this year’s decision is final.

For safety reasons, residents are urged not to use illegal fireworks or create their own displays in light of the cancellation.
