By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (April 18, 2025) — Omo Ranch, Calif. — The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Amador-El Dorado Unit, in collaboration with Sierra Pacific Industries, is set to conduct a prescribed fuels reduction burn today, April 18, 2025, as part of the Shake-Omo Vegetation Management Project (VMP). The operation is planned to commence at approximately 9 a.m. and continue until around 10 p.m., contingent upon favorable weather conditions and any directives from the El Dorado County Air Quality Management District (AQMD).

The targeted area encompasses approximately 35 acres of timber understory, grass, and brush near the intersection of Omo Ranch Road and Highway 88 in El Dorado County. This initiative aims to reduce hazardous fuels and enhance wildfire protection for the surrounding communities. The Amador Fire Protection District will assist in the execution of the burn.

“Prescribed burns are a critical component of our wildfire mitigation strategy,” said a CAL FIRE spokesperson. “They allow us to manage vegetation in a controlled manner, thereby reducing the intensity of potential wildfires.”

Smoke will be visible in the vicinity during the burn period. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to minimize smoke exposure, especially individuals with respiratory conditions.

All prescribed burns conducted by CAL FIRE are subject to rigorous evaluation. Conditions are assessed hourly using a “Go/No-Go” checklist that considers weather patterns, resource availability, and current incident activity. Should conditions become unfavorable, the operation will be halted immediately to ensure safety.

The El Dorado County AQMD has designated today as a “Burn Day,” permitting outdoor burning activities under specific guidelines. Residents must obtain appropriate permits for burns exceeding 4 feet by 4 feet and adhere to regulations prohibiting the burning of lumber and garbage.

For more information on prescribed burns and air quality regulations, residents can visit the El Dorado County AQMD website at www.eldoradocounty.ca.gov or follow CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit’s updates on their Facebook page.
