El Dorado County (Feb 27, 2024) – In a recent visit to The Center, California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil from district 4 expressed admiration for the organization’s innovative programs that have continually demonstrated a positive impact on the community. During the visit, staff members shared their experiences spanning various areas of services, including case management, legal support, group programs, and event coordination.

Senator Gil, sharing her personal connection to advocacy work, recounted her early career experience working at a rape crisis hotline and directly with children affected by domestic abuse. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the significance of establishing the Children’s Interview Center in Contra Costa, a venture that remains pivotal in shaping her role as a State Senator. “I am here to celebrate all of you and to thank you for the service that you are doing,” she expressed, acknowledging the valuable contributions of The Center.

Senator Gil recalled her impactful work at the Children’s Interview Center 25 years ago, working on almost 300 cases before starting her own family. She credited this experience as a significant influence on her current role as a State Senator.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement and Legal Services

Notably, The Center collaborates closely with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and Child Protective Services. This unique collaboration positions The Center as a crucial link between law enforcement and legal services, offering tools and support beyond the traditional scope of intervention.

Center on Success: Positive Solutions Program

The Center’s Positive Solutions program stands out as a beacon for those seeking to overcome abusive behavior patterns and enhance conflict resolution skills. The program, consisting of Men’s Alternatives to Abusive Patterns (MAAP) and women’s Changing Abusive Patterns (CAP) classes, is based on the foundation elements of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) by Marshall Rosenberg.

Key Focus Areas of Positive Solutions:

  1. Tools for Behavioral Change: Providing alternatives to abusive behavior and imparting the understanding that violence is not an appropriate problem-solving tool.
  2. Emotional Awareness: Developing an appreciation of feelings and emotions, fostering awareness of one’s emotional capacity, and teaching techniques for expressing a full range of human emotions.
  3. Attitude and Expectation Adjustment: Becoming aware of and changing attitudes and false expectations contributing to engaging in abusive behavior.

Success Metrics: 95% Completion Rate

The group model, central to the 52-week program, creates a safe environment for participants to share experiences, take responsibility for their actions, and develop conflict resolution skills. Remarkably, 95% of those completing the program do not return, indicating its effectiveness in changing unhealthy behaviors. Many participants voluntarily continue or become facilitators, helping others facing similar challenges.

The Center’s commitment to fostering lasting positive change aligns with Senator Gil’s acknowledgment of the vital role they play in the community, making it a beacon for advocacy and support.
