By Cris Alarcon, Staff Reporter, Pollock Pines (April 23, 2024)  -In a bid to promote safer and more accessible travel, El Dorado County is set to commence construction along the historic Pony Express Trail, ushering in a new era of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in Pollock Pines.

The initiative, spearheaded by the county’s Department of Transportation, forms part of the ambitious Pony Express Trail Bicycle, Pedestrian, and ADA Improvements Capital Improvement Project. Scheduled to kick off by the end of April or early May, this transformative endeavor aims to revamp the thoroughfare stretching between Sanders Drive and Sly Park Road, with an anticipated completion date slated for September 2024.

At the heart of the project lies a commitment to enhancing connectivity and safety for all travelers. Key enhancements include the installation of approximately 1.7 miles of Class II bike lanes, meticulously designed to cater to cyclists on both sides of the Pony Express Trail. Moreover, stringent adherence to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards underscores the county’s dedication to inclusivity, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can traverse the route with ease.

In addition to physical enhancements, the project encompasses a suite of safety measures, including the implementation of crosswalks and signage equipped with flashing beacons. These measures serve as vital signposts, guiding pedestrians and cyclists safely across the trail and heightening awareness among motorists.

Recognizing the inevitability of temporary disruptions, El Dorado County advises motorists to exercise patience and caution during the construction period. Temporary shoulder and lane closures along Pony Express Trail, managed by vigilant flagging crews, may necessitate slight adjustments to travel plans. As such, motorists are encouraged to factor in extra travel time to ensure timely arrivals at their destinations.

For those seeking further information or clarification regarding the construction process, the County’s Transportation mainline stands ready to assist. Interested parties can reach out to the dedicated engineering team via phone at (530) 621-5900, selecting Option 3 to connect with engineering representatives.

With the onset of construction looming on the horizon, El Dorado County sets its sights on a future where the Pony Express Trail stands as a beacon of connectivity, accessibility, and safety for all who traverse its storied path.
