El Dorado County (Jan 15, 2025) – In the aftermath of the 2021 Caldor Fire, which devastated the community of Grizzly Flats in El Dorado County, survivors have persistently sought federal assistance to rebuild their lives. Despite initial assurances, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denied Individual Assistance to the affected residents, leaving many in prolonged hardship.

El Dorado County District 2 Supervisor George Turnboo has been a steadfast advocate for the survivors. In a recent newsletter, he announced a renewed appeal to the federal government, addressing a letter to incoming President Donald J. Trump. Turnboo’s letter underscores the ongoing struggles of the Grizzly Flats community and emphasizes the necessity for federal support to aid in their recovery.

“We have petitioned [President Joe] Biden endlessly to issue FEMA Individual Assistance as required to help the residents of Grizzly Flats, CA,” Turnboo stated. “Now that Trump is taking over, we are renewing our pleas.”

The Caldor Fire destroyed hundreds of homes in Grizzly Flats, displacing numerous families. Many survivors have faced significant challenges due to underinsurance or lack of insurance, hindering their ability to rebuild. The absence of FEMA Individual Assistance has exacerbated these difficulties, prompting local officials and residents to seek alternative solutions.

Supervisor Turnboo has proposed the provision of tiny homes for the estimated 75 families who lost everything, aiming to offer immediate relief and a pathway to recovery.

The community’s resilience is evident as they continue to advocate for the necessary resources to rebuild their lives. The renewed appeal to President Trump reflects a persistent hope that federal assistance will be granted to support the long-term recovery of Grizzly Flats.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences regarding the ongoing recovery efforts. Your insights are invaluable as the community strives to rebuild and secure the assistance needed for a sustainable future.
