El Dorado County (Feb 6, 2024) Lee Tannenbaum – What I’m going to say is to all of the people, including candidates who are making this race a cannabis centric one. It isn’t. There are a lot of issues and I hope everyone does their full research before casting a vote. Cannabis, in my mind is actually way down the list for this election.

Several of the candidates have openly come out and stated they do not care about how people voted or what the people want, and they do not want cannabis in this county.

I respect their personal opinion, but as an elected official, you are responsible to carry the will of the people. And the people have voted overwhelmingly to legalize. Now our elected officials need to implement a working program.

Anyhow. There was a post on this page recently about donations to a candidate (Kevin McCarty) from a cannabis person. Seems that at least one other candidate (Greg Ferrero) is also taking donations from the cannabis industry.

Again, I applaud this. Thank you Greg for being open to the idea. But let’s stop the rhetoric about cannabis and how bad it is, etc. That ship has long since sailed.

Transparency in Political Contributions: The Form 460 Revelation

In the intricate dance of political financing, a crucial tenet comes to light: transparency. As stipulated by FPPC regulations, any contribution of $100 or more from a single source in a calendar year must be meticulously detailed on the committee’s Form 460. However, the intricacies do not end there. When contributions are funneled through an intermediary, the responsibility extends to not only identifying the intermediary but also revealing the true source of the contribution.

Form 460: Unveiling the Financial Tapestry

The Form 460 serves as the linchpin in this disclosure process. Filed with the El Dorado County Elections Department, these documents lay bare the financial underpinnings of political campaigns. Any contribution exceeding the $100 threshold triggers a requirement for explicit identification, thereby providing a comprehensive snapshot of the monetary backers behind political activities.

Public Accessibility: A Cornerstone of Accountability

Crucially, these Form 460 documents are not cloaked in secrecy. They are designated as public documents, accessible upon request. The El Dorado County Elections Department stands as the custodian of this trove of information, ready to furnish interested parties with a comprehensive understanding of the financial dynamics underpinning local political campaigns.

Conclusion: A Pillar of Open Democracy

The requirement to identify contributors and the meticulous detailing of financial transactions on Form 460 underscore the commitment to open democracy. Through this mechanism, voters, watchdogs, and interested citizens gain access to a transparent tableau of political financing, promoting accountability and ensuring that the funding landscape remains open to public scrutiny. In the realm of political contributions, the Form 460 emerges not just as a document but as a testament to the enduring principles of transparency and openness in the democratic process.
