PLACERVILLE, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2025) — El Dorado County continues to offer a relatively swift and cost-effective pathway for residents seeking a concealed carry permit, amid growing comparisons with nearby counties.

Detailed Breakdown: El Dorado County’s CCW Permit

  • New standard two-year permit: $218 total, which includes a $143 initial application fee (comprising $93 DOJ LiveScan and $50 administration) followed by a $75 issuance fee.

  • Renewal: $92—$52 DOJ processing and $40 administration.

  • Applicants may submit renewal only within 90 days before expiration.

  • Process timeline: One applicant shared that from submission to approval took about a month. Fingerprinting and class availability were the main delays.

  • Another recounted a three-week process from fingerprinting to permit pick-up, noting minimal in-person interaction and efficient processing.

“…from the date of my application submission to the date of my approval confirmation was almost a month exactly.”
“…it took about 3 weeks from the fingerprinting to picking up my license.”

Neighboring Counties: Placer and Sacramento

  • Placer County:

    • State filing fee: $20 application + $80 administrative fee = $100.

    • LiveScan fingerprint fee: approx. $93 (plus provider’s roll-fee).

    • Total costs typically range around $193, excluding training and range fees.

    • Local anecdotes indicate total CCW cost (including training) can reach ~$378, with a 30-day timeline to issuance.

  • Sacramento County (effective July 22, 2025):

    • Initial application: $288.

    • Issuance fee: $288 upon approval.

    • Combined initial cost: $576.

    • Renewal: $317 (includes DOJ background fee).

    • Duplicate/modification: $133.

    • Additional training requirements and state-mandated refresher courses may add extra costs.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Applicants and advocates highlight El Dorado’s balance of efficiency and affordability:

“I just got approved for my CCW … almost a month exactly. Most of that time was the wait for my appointment and then a two-week wait until the next available class … they have their shit together.”

Placer County users frequently note slightly higher but still reasonable costs:

“…about 30 days and a total of $553 (not including ammo, range fees, or targets). This is one of the fastest and easiest CCWs I’ve ever gotten.”

Context & Takeaways

  • Efficiency: El Dorado’s CCW process is notably faster compared to some counties where processing may stretch to three months or more.

  • Cost: At $218 for a new permit, El Dorado is more affordable than Sacramento’s $576 initial cost and comparable or slightly less than Placer’s estimated $193 (excluding training).

  • Accessibility: With limited delays and fewer bureaucratic hurdles, El Dorado appears to offer a more streamlined experience for residents.

EL DORADO COUNTY SHERIFF’S BLOTTER April 23, 2026 — Arranged by Area PLACERVILLE / MAIN STREET CORRIDOR The day broke with cuffs and cold steel along Forni Road and Broadway. A woman was booked on simple battery after a mid-day dust-up near a retail strip. Across town, a man picked up on Broadway faced a parole violation stacked atop a public nuisance charge—no bail, no delay. Echo Lane turned up a familiar mix: probation violations, a controlled substance, and a suspect who didn’t take kindly to deputies doing their job. Highway 49 saw one of the heavier hits—elder abuse, tear gas possession, and contempt rolled into a six-figure bail. Double Grove Street closed the books on the most serious collar of the day: a straight murder charge, no bail offered. Earlier paperwork circled back to a March arrest on Mountain View Road—attempted murder of a peace officer and assault with a semi-automatic firearm among the counts. By sundown, Placerville’s ledger read like old newsprint: violence, violations, and one case that won’t fade anytime soon. SHINGLE SPRINGS / EL DORADO HILLS Durock Road delivered a quiet but heavy felony—post-release supervision violated, no bail set. Gold Strike Drive saw a late-night DUI with probation already hanging by a thread—revoked, again, with bail climbing past $30,000. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE BASIN Emerald Bay Road logged a routine DUI—another driver caught leaning too hard on the bottle. Nearby Wildwood turned up the same story, different name—alcohol behind the wheel, zero bail posted. COUNTY WIDE / OTHER LOCATIONS A quarter-million-dollar warrant came due at RCCC—failure to appear on a felony doesn’t age well. The system caught up. It always does.
