SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA — In a monumental stride towards fostering early literacy, the Marcella Foundation has unveiled a groundbreaking partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, aimed at providing free books to every child from birth to their 5th birthday residing in El Dorado County. This ambitious endeavor, set to reach approximately 8,000 children, stands as a beacon of hope for enhancing educational opportunities in the region.

Under this initiative, spearheaded by the Marcella Foundation, children in El Dorado County will receive age-appropriate books on a monthly basis, all completely complimentary to their families. The books, available in both English and Spanish, seek to instill a passion for reading from the earliest stages of development.

The alliance, forged in collaboration with local stalwarts including First 5 El Dorado, El Dorado County Library, Friends of the Library, El Dorado Community Foundation, and United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, amplifies the impact of this literacy crusade. Melissa Uppendahl, Executive Director of Marcella Foundation, expressed her elation at the collective effort, emphasizing its potential to uplift every child in the area.

“This partnership embodies our commitment to fostering a culture of literacy and learning,”

Uppendahl remarked.

“By joining forces with esteemed organizations and the indomitable spirit of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, we aim to equip our children with the tools they need to flourish academically and beyond.”

At its core, the Marcella Foundation, founded by local luminary Sean Fannan, operates with a tripartite mission focusing on FEED, READ, and LEAD initiatives. The integration of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library into their repertoire marks a significant stride toward fulfilling the READ component, with an unwavering dedication to nurturing young minds.

Kathi Guerrero, Executive Director of First 5 El Dorado, underscored the pivotal role parents play in shaping a child’s educational journey. “The early years serve as the cornerstone of a child’s development,” Guerrero stated.

“Through programs like the Imagination Library, we empower parents to cultivate a love for learning in their children right from the start.”

Echoing this sentiment, Bryce Lovell, Director of Library Services at El Dorado County Library, highlighted the transformative potential of early exposure to books. “Access to books lays the foundation for lifelong learning,” Lovell emphasized. “By providing children with a diverse array of literary works, we not only enrich their minds but also cultivate a thirst for knowledge that transcends generations.”

Indeed, research underscores the profound impact of early literacy initiatives like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Since its inception in 1995, the program has distributed over 200 million free books worldwide, nurturing a generation of avid readers and lifelong learners. Penguin Random House’s partnership as the exclusive publisher further underscores the program’s commitment to delivering quality literature to children everywhere.

As enrollment opens for this transformative program in El Dorado County, families are urged to seize this invaluable opportunity to ignite a lifelong love for reading in their children.
