By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (April 5, 2025) — Placerville, Calif. — In response to escalating wildfire threats, El Dorado County has intensified its initiatives to protect homes and infrastructure through collaborative community and governmental actions.

The Office of Wildfire Preparedness and Resilience (OWPR) is leading the update of the Western El Dorado County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). This community-driven plan aims to identify and address local wildfire hazards, with completion anticipated in Spring 2025. The CWPP focuses on enhancing life safety, reducing wildfire threats to critical infrastructure, and promoting fire-adapted communities. Public participation is deemed crucial, with workshops held to gather resident input. Tom Meyer, OWPR Project Manager, emphasized, “Engaging our community is essential to developing a well-informed and actionable plan.”

Complementing the CWPP, the county supports the establishment of Firewise Communities. This nationally recognized program encourages neighbors to collaborate on reducing wildfire risks. Communities form committees, complete wildfire risk assessments, and develop action plans. Benefits include increased wildfire awareness, strengthened community bonds, and potential access to funding and insurance discounts.

The El Dorado County Fire Safe Council (EDCFSC) offers a Defensible Space Assistance Program targeting seniors, veterans, and low-income residents. This program provides services such as removing excess vegetation and creating defensible space around homes at no cost to eligible applicants. The goal is to improve the chances of homes surviving wildfires and to facilitate safer conditions for firefighters.

Local Fire Safe Councils, including the Placerville Fire Safe Council, play a pivotal role in community education and preparedness. These councils mobilize residents to protect their homes through initiatives like free chipping sessions and hazard tree removal programs. They emphasize the importance of defensible space and home hardening to mitigate wildfire risks.

The county has also declared May through October as Wildfire Awareness Season, urging residents to prepare for wildfire threats. Board Chair Wendy Thomas stated, “It is imperative that residents of El Dorado County be vigilant in preventing human-caused wildfires, as well as preparing their homes and properties to be resistant to the effects of wildfire.”
