PLACERVILLE, Calif. — El Dorado County’s Foster & Kinship Care Education (FKCE) program is hosting a slate of free online workshops in February 2026 designed to help foster and resource parents fulfill their required annual training hours under California’s Resource Family Approval (RFA) process.

Statewide FKCE programs provide classes that meet the annual 8-hour foster care education requirement for approved resource families, covering topics such as child development, trauma, attachment, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

Upcoming Workshops (Zoom):

● Thursday, Feb. 12 — Understanding and Supporting a Child with ADHD
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Occupational therapists from Growing Healthy Seasons will discuss behavioral and executive functioning challenges associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The session aims to help caregivers better understand listening and impulse control challenges, particularly in children who have experienced trauma or prenatal exposures. Participants will explore tools for supporting skills like emotional control, planning, and organization.

● Thursday, Feb. 19 — What Every Caregiver Needs to Know: Impacts of ACEs
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Sharon Guthrie, El Dorado County Foster Care Nurse, will explain how adverse childhood experiences can affect a child’s long-term health and behavior. The session will offer practical steps caregivers can take to help mitigate the harmful effects of trauma and build resiliency.

● Saturday, Feb. 21 & Saturday, March 7 — Activities to Promote Attachment and Attunement
10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (both dates)
This two-part series focuses on building secure attachments and emotional attunement with children of all ages, emphasizing sensory-based tools and games to help children feel calm and safe with caregivers.

Each Zoom registration link will automatically generate the meeting connection once users complete the RSVP form.

Local Context & Training Requirements:
Under California’s RFA framework, approved resource families must complete annual training to maintain compliance and best support the children in their care. These FKCE workshops are part of that continuing education effort and aim to equip participants with research-based caregiving strategies.

“When you understand what a child is experiencing — whether it’s attention challenges or the effects of trauma — you can respond with strategies that help them thrive,”

said one FKCE facilitator in outlining the goals of the February ADHD workshop.
