By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (April 10, 2025) — PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Mary Cory, who has served as the Administrator of the El Dorado County Historical Museum since 1989, has announced her retirement. The announcement was made during the Museum Commission’s monthly meeting last Friday.

Cory, the museum’s sole paid employee for nearly three decades, has been instrumental in preserving and showcasing the rich history of El Dorado County. Her extensive knowledge and dedication have been pivotal in maintaining the museum’s operations, often amidst limited funding and support.

One of the notable exhibitions under her leadership was “Specters on Glass: Studio Portraiture in Early 20th Century Placerville.” This collaborative effort between the El Dorado County Historical Museum, Placerville News, and Arts & Culture El Dorado, featured portraits of early county residents, bringing historical figures to life.

The museum has faced challenges recently, having been closed since December 26, 2024, due to staffing issues. During the recent Museum Commission meeting, Library Director Bryce Lovell, who oversees museum operations, stated that there are no immediate plans to hire a new administrator due to budget constraints imposed by the Board of Supervisors. Consequently, the museum will adjust its operating hours, opening only on Saturdays from 9 a.m.

The future of the museum remains uncertain as the community awaits further decisions from county officials regarding its operations and leadership.
