The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the Motherlode region, including El Dorado County, in effect from Friday, May 30 at 11 a.m. through Saturday, May 31 at 11 p.m. Forecasters predict dangerously high temperatures ranging from 99°F to 109°F, with little overnight relief as lows hover between the mid-60s and mid-70s.

The NWS warns of a “widespread Major HeatRisk,” noting the elevated potential for heat-related illnesses—particularly for vulnerable populations, those working outdoors, and individuals without access to air conditioning.

“This is not just hot—it’s dangerous,” said Drew Peterson, NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist.

“We want residents to take this seriously. Hydrate early, avoid strenuous activities during the peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly neighbors.”

Adding to the danger, local rivers and lakes continue to run cold and fast from recent snowmelt. The combination of scorching heat and icy water presents a high-risk scenario for people seeking relief. Swift currents and cold shock remain hazards for swimmers and boaters alike.

County officials recommend assembling a “go bag” in case of heat-related evacuations or power outages, and urge residents not to leave pets or children in parked vehicles, even for brief periods. Interior temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes.

Cooling centers are expected to open throughout the county later this week. Residents are advised to monitor edcgov.us or call 2-1-1 for updates.
