PLACERVILLE, Calif. — As the summer recreation season kicks off, El Dorado National Forest is preparing to welcome visitors back to several of its popular campgrounds starting May 24. However, areas still recovering from the 2021 Caldor Fire remain closed, and officials are urging caution due to lingering hazards.

Campgrounds such as Ice House and Union Valley are set to reopen, offering opportunities for camping, hiking, and water activities.

“We’re excited to reopen these areas for the public to enjoy,” said a spokesperson from the Eldorado National Forest. “However, safety remains our top priority.”

Despite these reopenings, several sites, including Loon Lake Chalet and Gray Rock, remain closed due to ongoing restoration efforts following the extensive damage caused by the Caldor Fire. Visitors are advised to check the latest updates on campground statuses before planning their trips .

The forest service warns of potential hazards in burned areas, such as fallen trees and unstable terrain. Additionally, rapid snowmelt has led to swift and cold stream conditions, posing risks to hikers and campers.

“It’s crucial for visitors to stay alert and be prepared for changing conditions,” the spokesperson added.

In response to increased bear activity, especially in areas like Desolation Wilderness, the use of bear-resistant food storage containers is now mandatory. This measure aims to protect both visitors and wildlife

Fire restrictions are also in effect throughout the forest. While campfires are permitted in designated developed campgrounds, they are prohibited in other areas unless visitors possess a valid Campfire Permit. These restrictions are part of ongoing efforts to prevent wildfires during the dry season .

For the latest information on campground openings, trail conditions, and safety guidelines, visitors are encouraged to consult the Eldorado National Forest’s official website or contact local ranger stations.
