One of El Dorado Hills’ locally known dining destinations has entered federal bankruptcy protection, signaling an effort to restructure its finances while continuing operations.

36 Handles Public House, located at 1010 White Rock Road in El Dorado Hills, filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 20 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California. The case is identified as Case No. 2:26-bk-24121. Court records indicate the business is proceeding under Chapter 11, a section of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code that generally allows businesses to continue operating while developing a plan to reorganize debts under court oversight.

Initial bankruptcy filings estimate the restaurant’s assets at between $500,001 and $1 million, while liabilities are listed between $100,001 and $500,000. Those figures represent preliminary ranges commonly disclosed in bankruptcy petitions and may be updated as the case proceeds through the federal court process.

According to California business records, 36 Handles Public House opened as a California corporation in January 2022 and operates as a restaurant and bar in the El Dorado Hills Town Center area.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy differs significantly from liquidation under Chapter 7. Instead of immediately closing its doors or selling off assets, a Chapter 11 debtor typically remains in possession of its business while negotiating with creditors and proposing a court-approved plan to repay obligations over time.

“Chapter 11 gives businesses an opportunity to reorganize while continuing operations under the supervision of the bankruptcy court.” — U.S. Courts, Overview of Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

For El Dorado County residents, the filing does not automatically mean the restaurant will close. Many businesses continue serving customers during Chapter 11 proceedings while management works with creditors to stabilize operations.

The filing also highlights the continuing challenges facing the restaurant industry. Independent restaurants throughout California have grappled with rising food costs, higher labor expenses, increased insurance premiums and softer discretionary consumer spending in recent years. Those economic pressures have led a growing number of hospitality businesses nationwide to seek bankruptcy protection as a restructuring tool rather than immediate closure.

As of Wednesday, no public statement regarding the bankruptcy filing had been released by the restaurant’s ownership.

The Chapter 11 case will continue in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California, where creditors, financial disclosures and any proposed reorganization plan will become part of the public court record as the case advances.
