PLACERVILLE, Calif. — The Placerville Food Co-op has launched an effort to purchase the building it has long occupied, a move leaders say is critical to securing the cooperative’s future and preserving a community-centered grocery option in El Dorado County.

For years, the member-owned store has operated from its current location while leasing the property. Buying the building would provide long-term stability, protect the co-op from rising commercial rents, and allow future investments in infrastructure, programs and local food partnerships, according to the organization.

“This is about more than real estate,” the Placerville Food Co-op said in a statement shared with members. “Owning our building means we can plan for the long term, serve our community with confidence, and ensure this co-op remains here for generations to come.”

The effort comes at a time when many independent grocers and cooperatives across California are facing pressure from increasing costs, consolidation in the grocery industry, and competition from large chains. Local food advocates say ownership can be a key tool in maintaining independence and keeping decision-making rooted in the community.

Stakeholders in the effort include the co-op’s member-owners, local farmers and producers who rely on the store as an outlet for their goods, employees, and Placerville residents who view the co-op as both a grocery store and a gathering place. Leaders say community support will be essential as the organization works through financing, member engagement and the formal purchase process.

The Placerville Food Co-op has indicated it will continue updating members and the public as the project moves forward, emphasizing transparency and community involvement at each step.
