Placerville, CA – On January 9, 2025, an El Dorado County jury found 48-year-old John Edward Tyler guilty of seven felonies and one misdemeanor, including criminal threats, possession of explosive devices, and firearm-related offenses.

The charges stem from an incident on October 6, 2023, at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds. Tyler confronted an individual who was eating lunch, threatened to shoot them, and prompted the victim to call 911. Placerville Police officers responded and found Tyler in an agitated state. A search of his truck revealed a can of pepper spray, a homemade shotgun, numerous rounds of ammunition, three pipe bombs, and additional materials for manufacturing explosive devices. The El Dorado County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team confirmed the pipe bombs were live devices filled with gunpowder and shrapnel; they were safely removed and rendered inert.
