SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Over the weekend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in coordination with multiple federal and local agencies, arrested eight individuals in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, Nevada, as part of a targeted enforcement operation focusing on individuals with prior criminal convictions.

Among those detained was Ernesto Lopez-Barrios, 50, a Salvadoran national apprehended in South Lake Tahoe. ICE officials confirmed that Lopez-Barrios has prior convictions for child molestation and driving under the influence (DUI) and is currently undergoing removal proceedings.

The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, targeted seven residential locations. These sites were identified through joint narcotics investigations and included individuals who were registered sex offenders or had outstanding warrants.

“The Department of Homeland Security initiated deportation proceedings for those arrested based on their identified threat to the community,”

stated Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.

This recent operation aligns with previous collaborative efforts in the region, such as “Operation Bear Trap,” which focused on dismantling criminal networks involved in drug and weapons trafficking in El Dorado County. That initiative led to multiple convictions and deportations, highlighting the ongoing commitment to public safety through interagency cooperation.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, acknowledged ICE’s presence during the operation but clarified that they did not participate directly in the arrests. ICE maintains that it does not conduct random raids or checkpoints, emphasizing that its operations are targeted and intelligence-driven.

Residents in El Dorado County are encouraged to stay informed about local law enforcement activities and to report any suspicious behavior to the appropriate authorities.
