For decades, motorists traveling through Diamond Springs have experienced one of western El Dorado County’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks. Whether heading between Placerville, Cameron Park or communities farther south, drivers often find themselves inching through downtown along State Route 49.

County officials believe the Diamond Springs Parkway will fundamentally change that.

The project, managed by the El Dorado County Department of Transportation, will create a new four-lane divided roadway connecting Missouri Flat Road with State Route 49, providing a direct route between U.S. Highway 50 and the southern portions of the county while bypassing much of historic downtown Diamond Springs.

Why the project is being built

According to El Dorado County, the primary goals are straightforward:

  • Improve traffic safety along State Route 49.
  • Reduce congestion through historic Diamond Springs.
  • Improve regional mobility between Highway 50 and southern El Dorado County.
  • Reduce conflict points created by numerous residential driveways along Highway 49.
  • Support future population and commercial growth while maintaining acceptable traffic operations.

County transportation studies found that the existing Highway 49 corridor experiences above-average traffic delays and a higher-than-average number of collisions. Rather than widening the historic downtown corridor, planners opted to construct a parallel roadway capable of carrying regional through traffic while preserving the character of the town center.

Project timeline

The Diamond Springs Parkway has been planned for years and is being completed in multiple phases.

Phase 1A

  • Construction completed in February 2022.
  • Included portions of the new roadway and related infrastructure.

Phase 1B

  • Construction began in July 2025.
  • Work includes construction of the remaining four-lane parkway, Highway 49 realignment, intersections, frontage roads, drainage improvements, utility relocation and trail connections.
  • Scheduled completion: December 2026.

Construction activity has resulted in temporary traffic changes, including periodic closures and detours around Bradley Drive and Throwita Way as crews continue building the roadway network.

What drivers can expect

When complete, the new roadway is expected to:

  • Offer a faster connection between Missouri Flat Road and Highway 49.
  • Divert commuter traffic away from downtown Diamond Springs.
  • Improve emergency response times.
  • Enhance bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.
  • Reduce congestion at several key intersections.

Residents traveling between Placerville, El Dorado, Somerset and communities farther south are expected to benefit most from the improved travel times.

Official perspective

El Dorado County describes the project’s mission this way:

“The primary purpose of this project is to improve traffic safety and operations on portions of State Route 49 in the vicinity of Diamond Springs.”

The county also says the parkway will provide a parallel connection between State Route 49 and U.S. Highway 50, relieving congestion through the historic community while improving access for residents, visitors and businesses.

Community impact

The project has generated both support and concern within Diamond Springs.

Many commuters have welcomed the promise of shorter travel times and improved safety. Others have closely followed discussions involving construction impacts, environmental cleanup, trail connections and the long-term effect on downtown businesses.

County officials maintain that reducing regional through traffic should allow the historic business district to function more as a local destination while improving overall transportation efficiency throughout western El Dorado County.

Residents seeking construction updates, traffic advisories and project documents can follow the El Dorado County Department of Transportation’s Diamond Springs Parkway project page, where schedules, maps and public notices are posted as work progresses.
