El Dorado County Firefighters Take Fire Prevention Into the Classroom

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — Fire prevention lessons are reaching elementary school classrooms across El Dorado County this October as local firefighters teach students how to recognize household fire hazards and protect their families.

The El Dorado County Fire Protection District recently visited Sierra School as part of its annual fire prevention education efforts. Fire crews and fire prevention staff are visiting schools throughout the district during October, with additional classroom presentations planned for the remainder of the month.

The district described the Sierra School visit as a success, thanking school staff and other local educators for helping bring fire safety into conversations at school and at home.

“Safe charging is a superpower!” the district said in its public message, reinforcing the central theme of this year’s campaign.

Safe Charging Takes Center Stage in 2026

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” The campaign highlights the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which power many everyday electronics as well as larger devices such as electric bicycles and scooters.

Students are learning several practical ways to reduce charging-related hazards:

  • Use the correct charger. Follow the device manufacturer’s charging instructions and use a compatible, approved charger.
  • Choose a safe charging location. Place devices on a hard, flat surface rather than on beds, couches or other soft materials that can trap heat.
  • Unplug fully charged devices. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and avoid leaving charging devices unattended when possible.
  • Recognize warning signs. Unusual heat, swelling, damage or other abnormal behavior can signal a battery problem. Stop using a suspect device and follow manufacturer safety instructions.
  • Keep exits clear. Charge e-bikes, scooters and other large battery-powered devices where they will not block doors, hallways or escape routes.

Lithium-ion battery incidents can develop rapidly. Teaching children to recognize warning signs and tell an adult about a damaged or overheating device can help households respond before a dangerous situation escalates.

Smoke Alarms and Escape Plans Remain Essential

Safe charging is only one part of the district’s classroom message. Firefighters are also reminding students that every home needs working smoke alarms and a practiced escape plan.

Families should make sure smoke alarms are installed in appropriate locations, tested regularly and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable safety guidance.

A home fire escape plan should identify two ways out of every room when possible, along with a designated outdoor meeting place where family members can gather after escaping. Everyone in the household should know the plan, and families should practice it together.

Children should also understand that getting outside safely takes priority over collecting belongings. Once outside, they should stay outside and tell a trusted adult or emergency responder if someone may still be inside.

For families in El Dorado County, where residents live in communities with differing road access, terrain and distances from emergency services, preparation at home is an important part of overall safety. A clear escape plan and working alarms can help people act quickly when seconds matter.

Schools and Families Share Responsibility for Fire Safety

The district’s October school visits are designed to make fire prevention relevant beyond the classroom. Students can carry those lessons home by asking adults to check smoke alarms, reviewing family escape routes and identifying a safe place to meet outside.

Parents and caregivers can reinforce the message by reviewing charging instructions for household electronics, inspecting devices and batteries for damage, and keeping charging equipment away from combustible materials and exit paths.

The El Dorado County Fire Protection District thanked Sierra School for hosting the visit and acknowledged local schools for helping make fire safety a shared community priority.

With more classroom visits planned throughout October, the district is continuing its effort to help students understand that fire prevention begins with everyday decisions — at school, at home and wherever battery-powered devices are used.
