A Marine’s Battle: The Enduring Legacy of Mat Wroblewski

Nancy and Mat Wroblewski were married for 57 years

El Dorado Hills (July 6, 2024) – In 2003, retired Marine Corporal Mat Wroblewski received a life-altering diagnosis: blood cancer. Having served at Camp Lejeune in the late 1950s, he faced a battle he never anticipated. Unlike many, Mat chose not to pursue legal action or benefits from the Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012. Instead, he focused on healing. Under the care of Dr. Joseph Tuscano at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mat’s lymphoma went into remission after completing treatment in 2004, granting him 14 years of respite.

During his remission, Mat transitioned his company, Precision Contacts, Inc. (PCI) of El Dorado Hills, to his sons and embraced a fulfilling retirement. He became an active volunteer with El Dorado County’s Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees (S.T.A.R.), dedicating his time to enhancing community safety and crime prevention.

Nancy Wroblewski, Mat’s devoted widow, recalls his unwavering positivity and resilience. “I’ve seen and heard more complaints from people with a cold than I ever experienced or heard from Mat during any of his bouts with lymphoma,” she remarked. Mat’s commitment to service extended beyond his life, as he and Nancy decided to support cancer research financially. Upon his passing, they contributed $125,000 to Dr. Tuscano’s blood cancer research, with Nancy recently pledging an additional $200,000.

Dr. Tuscano expressed deep gratitude for their generosity, emphasizing the impact of their support on groundbreaking research aimed at harnessing the body’s immune system to combat cancer. “They both were committed to helping to reduce the impact and suffering from this malignancy,” Tuscano said.

Mat’s story is not just one of personal courage but also of enduring generosity. His legacy continues through Nancy’s dedication to their shared mission of advancing cancer research. “Life has really been good to us during our 57-year marriage,” Nancy reflected. “Mat was very proud of being a Marine, never showing any anger or regret about his time at Camp Lejeune. His treatment allowed him to live another 14 years, and most importantly, he was able to do all the activities he enjoyed and be with his family.”

In honoring Mat’s wishes, Nancy ensures that their contributions fuel the race for a cure, embodying the spirit of a Marine always committed to the greater good.
