GOLD HILL, Calif. — El Dorado County is preparing to welcome a delegation from its sister city, Warabi, Japan, as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of their cultural exchange program. The delegation is scheduled to arrive on April 25, with a welcome party planned for May 2, 2025.

Janet Sambochetti, president of the local People to People chapter, outlined the plans during the El Dorado County Economic Development Commission meeting on January 28. The celebration will honor Mr. Roske Imai, a founding member of the sister city program, for his instrumental role in fostering the relationship over the decades.

In addition to the festivities, the chapter is proposing the construction of a Torii gate at the local library. This structure would symbolize the cultural ties between the two cities and serve as a visible reminder of their connection. The library is considered an ideal location due to its visibility and existing commemorative elements, such as a plaque and cherry trees planted in honor of the sister city relationship.

Over the past 50 years, more than 1,000 individuals have participated in exchanges between El Dorado County and Warabi, fostering mutual understanding and cultural appreciation. The upcoming anniversary not only marks a historical connection but also sets the stage for future collaborations and exchanges that will continue to enrich both communities.

The celebration coincides with broader milestones in U.S.-Japan relations, including the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of Sister Cities International. To commemorate these milestones, Sister Cities International will hold a U.S.-Japan Sister Cities Summit from September 16 to 19, 2025, in Izumisano City, Osaka. The summit aims to strengthen bilateral partnerships and honor citizen diplomats who have been key to U.S.-Japan relations.

El Dorado County’s commitment to international friendship and cultural exchange continues to thrive, reflecting the enduring bond between the communities of Placerville and Warabi.
