El Dorado Hills, CA (March 14, 2025) – By Staff Writer — Gatha “Gay” Willyard, a longtime resident of El Dorado Hills, has been named the El Dorado County Woman of the Year for California’s Senate District 4. The honor was bestowed upon her by Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil during a recent ceremony at the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Established in 1987 by Assemblywomen Bev Hansen and Sally Tanner, the Woman of the Year event recognizes the significant contributions of women throughout California. Each year, one woman from each Senate and Assembly district is honored at the Capitol for their accomplishments in a formal ceremony on the floors of the Senate and Assembly.

Willyard’s dedication to public service is well-documented. She has served as the president of the El Dorado West Republican Women Federated, actively engaging in local political activities.

In 2017, following the passing of her husband of 51 years, she continued her community involvement by working part-time at a retirement village and dedicating time to gardening projects, including contributions to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.

In 2016-2017, Willyard was a member of the El Dorado County Grand Jury, reflecting her commitment to civic duties.

Approximately 1.5 years ago, she was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric cancer. Her family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical and living expenses during her treatment, highlighting her resilience and previous successful battle against breast cancer.

Senator Alvarado-Gil praised Willyard’s unwavering commitment to the community, stating,

“Gay’s dedication and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all. Her contributions have made a lasting impact on El Dorado County.”

Willyard’s recognition as Woman of the Year underscores her enduring commitment to public service and her significant influence within the El Dorado Hills community.
