El Dorado County (Sept 21, 2024) – In what can only be described as the marmot’s ultimate YOLO moment, Pollock Pines became the final stop on an unlikely road trip for a stowaway of the furriest kind. Forget postcards—this chunky, furry explorer hitched a ride from the majestic wilderness of Yosemite National Park, only to be discovered, snuggled up in the engine of a rather confused local’s car. Who needs GPS when you’ve got a knack for crawling into the nearest warm, dark space?

This “mountain mouse” clearly had a love for high adventure, because instead of sticking to the scenic views of Yosemite’s alpine regions, it opted for the undercarriage of a random vehicle. Maybe it was seeking a shortcut to a vacation home? No one’s quite sure what possessed the marmot to abandon its rugged natural habitat for the cozy confines of a motor, but here we are.

When the car’s owner popped the hood for what was supposed to be a routine check, they were greeted not by an overheating engine, but by a wide-eyed marmot caught mid-nap. The real drama kicked in when local firefighters were called to play marmot midwives, gently coaxing the bewildered creature out of its grease-splattered hiding place.

After a whole lot of delicate wrangling and what was probably a good deal of marmot side-eye, the little traveler was safely extracted. Local wildlife experts swooped in to make sure this wasn’t going to be a repeat performance. They chauffeured the critter back to Yosemite, releasing it in an area where cars (and apparently spontaneous vacation plans) are harder to come by.

Meanwhile, the car owner? Well, they’re left with a story that’ll trump everyone else’s road-trip tales for a lifetime: “Oh, your car broke down in the desert? Cute. I had a marmot in my engine.”
