OUTINGDALE, Calif. — A house fire in the rural El Dorado County community of Outingdale was likely sparked after family dogs accidentally activated a cooking appliance, according to the Pioneer Fire Protection District.

Firefighters responded to the residential structure fire and were able to contain the blaze before it spread to nearby vegetation or neighboring properties. No firefighter injuries were reported, and investigators continue working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fire. Preliminary findings indicate the home’s dogs may have unintentionally caused the ignition while the residence was unoccupied.

While accidental fires involving pets are uncommon, fire officials across the country have documented incidents in which dogs have turned on stove controls while attempting to reach food left on countertops or cooktops. Such incidents have prompted many fire agencies to recommend removing food from stovetops, using child- or pet-proof stove knob covers and keeping combustible materials away from cooking appliances.

“Our crews were able to stop the fire before it became an even larger incident,” Pioneer Fire officials said in a public statement, while reminding residents to take simple precautions that can prevent accidental home fires.

The incident occurred within Pioneer Fire Protection District’s response area, which serves many of El Dorado County’s rural communities, including Outingdale, Grizzly Flats, Somerset, Fair Play, Mt. Aukum and Omo Ranch. The district covers nearly 300 square miles of wildfire-prone foothill terrain, making rapid suppression of residential fires especially important during the summer fire season.

Although the fire appears to have been accidental, officials emphasized that cooking equipment remains one of the leading causes of residential structure fires. Homeowners are encouraged to keep stove controls secured when leaving the house, avoid leaving food or grease on cooking surfaces and ensure smoke alarms are functioning properly.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released an estimated dollar loss or additional details regarding the extent of damage to the home.
