El Dorado County (Oct 11, 2024) –

Homewood Mountain Resort, a Lake Tahoe gem known for its stunning lake views and laid-back atmosphere, will not be opening for the 2024-2025 ski season. The resort, cherished by locals and visitors alike, has struggled in recent years with ongoing financial and operational challenges. These include infrastructure difficulties and the stiff competition posed by larger ski resorts in the region. Despite Homewood’s reputation as a peaceful alternative to Tahoe’s bigger names like Palisades Tahoe and Northstar, it has been unable to sustain operations for the upcoming season.

The news has come as a blow to many skiing enthusiasts, especially those who treasured Homewood’s low-key, community-centered vibe. The resort, long a favorite for families and beginners, offered an experience free from the overcrowding typical at larger ski resorts. However, Homewood has been operating at a financial loss for some time. Attempts to maintain operations while awaiting approvals for essential infrastructure upgrades, such as a new gondola system outlined in their 2011 Master Plan, have stalled. Delays in securing these approvals, coupled with financial instability and the recent withdrawal of private backing, ultimately led to the difficult decision to close.

Many are concerned about what this closure means for the future of the resort, with questions swirling around when—or if—Homewood will reopen. While the resort’s management remains hopeful that infrastructure improvements and future redevelopment could stabilize its finances, some fear that Homewood’s original charm could be lost in the process. High ticket prices, limited marketing, and the shift toward luxury real estate development have alienated much of the resort’s core audience, particularly families and beginner skiers.

For now, Homewood’s closure is a sobering reminder of the challenges facing smaller ski resorts in an increasingly competitive market. With rising demand at other Tahoe resorts, skiers will face longer lift lines and increased crowding as they flock to the remaining options. Though Homewood’s future remains uncertain, the resort’s fans continue to hope for a comeback that preserves its unique local character.

Looking Ahead

As Homewood navigates this financial crisis, much will depend on their ability to balance development with community access. While the resort has vowed to return in a more sustainable way, it is clear that the road ahead will be challenging. Whether Homewood can rise again and maintain its reputation as a beloved, down-to-earth ski haven will be a story to watch closely.
