OfficeMax Shutters Placerville Store Amidst Ongoing Restructuring

OfficeMax Closes Placerville Store

Placerville, [Feb 13, 2024] – OfficeMax, a prominent office supplies retailer and subsidiary of The ODP Corp., has officially announced the permanent closure of its store located at 3041 Forni Road in Placerville. The move is part of a broader corporate strategy as The ODP Corp. navigates the evolving retail landscape.

The closure, marked by a storewide sale offering discounts of up to 30%, is accompanied by uncertainty regarding the location’s final day of operation. A representative from the store confirmed the planned closure but directed inquiries for additional comments to ODP Corp., which, as of Monday, had not responded to requests for further information.

Situated in a complex along Forni Road, adjacent to In-N-Out Burger and an Arco gas station, the retail property, encompassing a 23,500-square-foot building, seems to have been listed for sale on LoopNet last September. However, recent indications suggest that the property is no longer actively advertised.

With the Placerville closure, ODP Corp. will retain only three locations in the greater Sacramento area: Office Depot stores on Douglas Boulevard in Roseville and Folsom Boulevard in Sacramento, and an OfficeMax on Arden Way.

The decision aligns with ODP Corp.’s gradual shift away from the traditional brick-and-mortar business model toward a more business-to-business (B2B) services and distribution approach. This transition, initiated in 2019, has led to the closure of multiple stores nationwide, including a recent shutdown in Davis in the fall of the previous year and the closure of an Office Depot store in South Sacramento in 2022.

In its third-quarter earnings presentation, ODP Corp. acknowledged a decline in sales at both Office Depot and OfficeMax locations, citing weaker macroeconomic conditions and a reduction in the number of operating stores. The company reported 71 fewer operating stores in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year.

As OfficeMax bids farewell to its Placerville location, the company continues to adapt to the challenges of the modern retail landscape, emphasizing a commitment to evolving business strategies in response to shifting market dynamics.
