The Duel That Shaped Hangtown: Dr. Willis vs. “Doc” Hullings

Doc Hullings duel in Hangtown

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — In the bustling days of the California Gold Rush, the mining camp of Hangtown—later known as Placerville—was a magnet for fortune seekers and opportunists alike. Among them was a man known as “Doc” Hullings, the camp’s self-appointed physician. Despite lacking any formal medical education, Hullings established himself as the town’s healer, his practice fueled more by bravado than by knowledge. His volatile temper and penchant for alcohol were well-known; sobriety was a rare state for him, and his medical competence fluctuated accordingly. Nonetheless, in a town teeming with transient miners and makeshift establishments, Hullings commanded a certain respect—perhaps born of necessity rather than genuine esteem.

The status quo persisted until the arrival of Dr. Edward Willis, a young and formally trained physician from the city. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Willis brought with him not only a medical degree but also a demeanor of calm assurance. He set up his practice in a modest tent, a simple sign above the entrance proclaiming his services as “Doctor & Surgeon.” His presence was a stark contrast to the erratic and uncredentialed Doc Hullings.

News of Dr. Willis’s arrival did not sit well with Hullings. Viewing the newcomer as a direct threat to his dominion over the town’s medical needs, Hullings confronted Dr. Willis in his tent, demanding that he leave Hangtown immediately. Dr. Willis, embodying the composure befitting his profession, refused to be intimidated. He calmly stated his intention to stay and serve the community, then firmly asked Hullings to vacate his premises. This unexpected defiance left Hullings seething; unused to resistance, he stormed out to brood over the challenge to his authority.

A few days later, Hullings returned, this time accompanied by a group of armed miners, perhaps hoping that a show of force would compel Dr. Willis to relent. He demanded to see Dr. Willis’s medical diploma—a document he himself lacked. Dr. Willis produced the certificate without hesitation. In a fit of rage, Hullings seized the diploma, tore it in half, and cast it to the ground, an act meant to demean and discredit the legitimate physician. Paul Clam, a friend and supporter of Dr. Willis who witnessed the altercation, reacted swiftly, delivering a punch that sent Hullings sprawling. As Hullings scrambled to his feet, restrained by onlookers, he issued a challenge to both Clam and Dr. Willis—a duel to settle the matter once and for all.

The duel was arranged to take place in an abandoned mining pit on the outskirts of the camp—a grim arena for a deadly confrontation. According to the agreed terms, Hullings would first face Paul Clam, with pistols as their chosen weapons. The local sheriff officiated the proceedings, a somber reminder of the lawless nature of frontier justice. At the sheriff’s command to “FIRE,” shots rang out. Both men fell; Clam was grievously wounded, struck by three bullets, while Hullings lay dead—a violent end to a tumultuous tenure as Hangtown’s dubious doctor.

In the aftermath, the principles of Miner’s Law came into effect: a man who abandoned his claim forfeited his rights. With Hullings’ demise, his claim to the role of camp physician was considered abandoned. Dr. Edward Willis stepped into the position, his first duty being the arduous task of saving Paul Clam’s life. His first official act as the recognized physician of Hangtown was to sign the death certificate of his predecessor, a poignant punctuation to the turbulent tale of the dueling doctors.
