PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Nestled within the historic El Dorado County Fairgrounds, Placerville Speedway has been a cornerstone of Northern California’s racing community since its inception in 1965. Originally dubbed “Hangtown Speedway,” the quarter-mile high-banked clay oval track was constructed by local racing enthusiasts, including Clyde Britton and Andy Ferris, who sought to bring organized auto racing to the region.

Over the decades, the speedway has undergone numerous enhancements, solidifying its reputation as a premier venue for dirt track racing. It has hosted a variety of racing events, from weekly point races to nationally recognized competitions, attracting both local talents and renowned drivers from across the country.

Legends Night: Celebrating Racing Heritage

A highlight of the speedway’s annual calendar is the “Legends Night,” an event dedicated to honoring the rich history of racing in the region. This special night brings together past and present drivers, crews, and fans to celebrate the sport’s legacy. The 2025 Legends Night is scheduled as a two-day affair on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3, coinciding with the Nor*Cal Posse Shootout.

The Nor*Cal Posse Shootout, integrated into the Legends Weekend, features the Ultimate Sprint Car Series and Winged 360 Sprint Cars, promising thrilling races that pay homage to the track’s storied past.

Hangtown 100: A Marquee Event

Another signature event at Placerville Speedway is the Hangtown 100, introduced in 2019 as one of the richest two-day USAC Midget races in history. The event quickly gained prominence, drawing top-tier talent and offering fans exhilarating racing action. The 2025 edition of the Hangtown 100 is slated for November 14 and 15, with the finale featuring a 100-lap main event on Saturday.

Track promoter Scott Russell emphasized the event’s significance, stating,

“The Hangtown 100 has become a marquee event to close out the season at Placerville Speedway.”

Looking Ahead

As Placerville Speedway approaches its 60th anniversary, the 2025 season stands as a testament to its enduring legacy in the racing community. With events like Legends Night and the Hangtown 100, the speedway continues to honor its rich history while propelling the sport forward, ensuring that both longtime fans and new enthusiasts experience the thrill of dirt track racing in El Dorado County.
