By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (March 28, 2025) —  Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing K-12 education nationwide, with El Dorado County schools beginning to explore its potential to enhance learning experiences. AI’s integration into classrooms offers opportunities for personalized education, administrative efficiency, and skill development, while also presenting challenges that educators are working to address.

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 10:15 a.m. EST, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) will chair a hearing titled “From Chalkboards to Chatbots: The Impact of AI on K-12 Education” before the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education.

AI Adoption in Classrooms

A 2023 survey by the RAND Corporation revealed that 18% of K-12 teachers in the United States reported using AI for teaching, with an additional 15% having experimented with it. Middle and high school educators, particularly those teaching English language arts or social studies, were more inclined to utilize AI tools such as virtual learning platforms, adaptive learning systems, and chatbots on a weekly basis.

Benefits and Opportunities

In California, the Department of Education emphasizes that responsible use of AI in K-12 schools can support critical thinking, workflow organization, ethical technology use, and effective communication in a digitally connected world.

Recognizing AI’s growing importance, California enacted legislation in late 2024 to integrate AI literacy into the K-12 curriculum statewide. Assemblymember Marc Berman stated, “AB 2876 responds to the rapid proliferation of AI in nearly every aspect of young people’s lives, as well as the impact AI will have on their futures.”

Challenges and Concerns

Despite the potential benefits, some educators express reservations about AI’s role in education. A Pew Research Center survey from May 2024 found that 25% of public K-12 teachers believe AI tools do more harm than good in education, while 32% see an equal mix of benefits and drawbacks.

Concerns include the potential for AI to exacerbate the digital divide and educational inequities. The Center for American Progress warns that expanded use of AI tools might deepen existing disparities, highlighting the need for careful implementation to ensure equitable access.

Local Initiatives in El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) is actively supporting local school districts in integrating technology best practices, staff development, and curriculum collaboration. EDCOE’s mission includes developing and implementing technology strategies to enhance instructional quality.

While specific AI initiatives in El Dorado County schools are still emerging, the county’s commitment to technological advancement positions it well to adopt AI tools that can enrich the educational experience.

Looking Ahead

As AI continues to evolve, its impact on K-12 education will depend on thoughtful integration that balances innovation with ethical considerations. Educators and policymakers in El Dorado County and beyond are tasked with ensuring that AI serves as a tool to enhance learning while addressing concerns about equity and effectiveness.

By fostering AI literacy and implementing responsible policies, schools can prepare students for a future where AI plays a significant role in various aspects of life and work.
