Placerville, CA. – The City of Placerville’s ambition to establish a joint public safety facility remains steadfast, yet financial constraints continue to impede progress. This initiative aims to co-locate the Placerville Police Department and the El Dorado County Fire Protection District under one roof, addressing the pressing inadequacies of their current, outdated facilities.

In November 2022, a comprehensive Space Needs Assessment and Feasibility Study highlighted significant deficiencies in both existing structures. The Placerville Police Station, located at 730 Main Street, faces challenges such as limited expansion capabilities, insufficient secured parking, and numerous building code violations. Similarly, Fire Station 25 at 3034 Sacramento Street struggles with space constraints, inadequate living quarters, and non-compliance with current safety standards. These issues underscore the urgent need for a modernized facility to effectively serve the community’s emergency response requirements.

Efforts to secure funding have seen some success. In December 2023, Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil presented a $1 million state-funded check to kickstart the project. During the presentation, Fire Chief Tim Cordero expressed gratitude, stating, “This funding is a tremendous start towards providing our firefighters and police officers the facility they desperately need.”

Despite this initial boost, the project faces a substantial financial hurdle. A City Manager’s report from January 2025 detailed the challenges in identifying sustainable funding sources. The estimated cost of the new facility stands at $50 million. While federal loan programs offer favorable terms, they would result in an annual repayment exceeding $2 million—a significant commitment for the city. The report also explored alternative options, including constructing separate facilities or renovating existing ones, but each presents its own set of challenges and financial implications.

As Placerville continues to navigate these financial complexities, the vision of a consolidated public safety facility remains a priority. City officials are actively exploring diverse funding avenues, including grants, loans, and community partnerships, to bring this critical project to fruition.
