Placerville, Calif. — A wet, windy system rolling into the Mother Lode will bring a rising chance of rain tonight and a period of heavy, gusty showers Thursday that could lead to ponding on roads and travel impacts across El Dorado County, the National Weather Service and local broadcasters say.

Forecasters expect mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of showers overnight. Lows are forecast in the 50s, with southeast winds up to 15 mph and gusts near 30 mph. Thursday starts wet for many foothill communities, then shifts into heavier rain and stronger winds in the afternoon. Highs will top out in the mid-50s to mid-60s depending on elevation.

The heaviest rains are likely Thursday, with the Foothills — including communities north and south of Highway 50 — seeing the most persistent rates. Local TV meteorologists are already calling Thursday an “impact day” because of the combination of soaking rain and gusty winds that could make travel slower and lead to standing water on streets and highways. Motorists should plan for reduced visibility and slick pavement during the heavier bands.

“Prepare for periods of heavy rain and gusty winds Thursday that could cause ponding on roadways and difficult travel conditions,” said the National Weather Service in its Placerville forecast discussion. “Take measures now to secure outdoor items and allow extra travel time.”

Thursday night will remain unsettled, with showers continuing and a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms before cooler air drops nighttime lows into the low 40s to mid-50s across the county. The front should taper to scattered showers Friday, with mostly light winds and a gradual cooldown through the weekend. There remains a chance of light showers into early next week with cooler overnight temperatures, especially in the higher elevations.

Impacts and tips
• Travel: Expect slower commutes Thursday; leave earlier and allow extra stopping distance on wet roads.
• Local roads and drainage: Low-lying streets and culverts may pond; avoid driving through standing water.
• Outdoors and property: Secure patio furniture, tarps, and other loose items ahead of gusty periods.

For the latest conditions and any watches or warnings, residents should consult the National Weather Service Placerville office and local media updates.
