Cameron Park, California – Elsie Janett Shilin, a remarkable woman of diverse heritage, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 94. Elsie’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, laughter, and a profound commitment to family and community.

Born on July 25, 1929, Elsie grew up in a household resonating with the harmonies of Hawaiian music, a testament to her Portuguese, Hawaiian, and Native American roots. Raised alongside six brothers, her early years were marked by the warmth of familial bonds. Despite humble beginnings, Elsie’s spirit and determination led her to embark on a life journey filled with resilience and accomplishments.

Leaving formal education at 16 to enter the workforce, Elsie’s early career required her to falsify her age for employment opportunities. At 18, she married Alec, and together they raised a family, welcoming children Danny, Tim, and Kathy into their lives. Undeterred by the demands of family life, Elsie later pursued higher education, eventually earning her master’s degree in social work from Sacramento State University.

Elsie’s zest for life extended beyond academic pursuits. Her career with the State ignited a passion for travel, allowing her to explore the world by land, sea, and air. Hawaii held a special place in her heart, where she would immerse herself in the rich cultural tapestry for extended periods, reveling in the spiritual energy known as “mana.”

Retirement marked a new chapter for Elsie as she dedicated herself to advocating for her community. Collaborating with family members and tribal elders, she played a pivotal role in establishing the Shingle Springs Rancheria as a federally recognized tribal government. Elsie’s leadership as the first tribal chairperson showcased her tireless dedication and love for her community, earning her widespread respect and admiration.

Elsie’s journey was not without its share of loss. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elsie Fonseca, brothers Henry, John, Daniel, Tony, and Harry, as well as children Tim and Kathy. She leaves behind a legacy cherished by her surviving family: brother Fred and sister-in-law Theresa; son Danny and daughter-in-law Teri; grandchildren Jeff, Greg, Allie, Nicole, Allison, and Joel; along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Elsie’s extraordinary life will take place on February 24, 2024, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the gymnasium on the Shingle Springs Rancheria. This event will serve as a testament to a life well-lived, honoring Elsie’s enduring impact on the community she loved so dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to [charity of choice], reflecting Elsie’s spirit of generosity and community service. May her memory be a source of inspiration for generations to come.
