Placerville Hosts Youth Mutton Busting Event at Local Arena
PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A youth rodeo tradition is set to buck back into action this season as families gather for a mutton busting event at Empire Equestrian, offering children ages 4 to 7 a chance to test their grit in a safe, structured environment.
The event begins at 10 a.m. and is open to riders weighing 70 pounds or less. Entry is set at $60 per participant, with a minimum of 35 and a maximum of 80 competitors. Organizers note the event will only proceed if temperatures remain below 100 degrees, a precaution aimed at ensuring the safety of both children and animals.
Participants are required to bring their own helmets and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Chest protectors will be provided onsite. Lunch and beverages will also be available for purchase, making the event accessible for families planning to spend the day.
“This is a great opportunity for young riders to build confidence and get comfortable in the arena before the El Dorado County Fair,”
event organizers said in a statement.
“It’s all about fun, learning, and giving kids a memorable first taste of rodeo competition.”
Winners will be awarded Champion and Reserve Champion belt buckles, adding a competitive edge to what is often described as a lighthearted and laughter-filled experience.
Mutton busting—where children ride sheep in a rodeo-style format—has become a staple at county fairs across the West, blending entertainment with early exposure to livestock handling and rodeo culture. Events like this serve as informal training grounds for young competitors eyeing future participation in larger competitions, including the El Dorado County Fair.
