As Memorial Day weekend arrives across El Dorado County and the Sierra region, law enforcement officials are urging residents and visitors to think twice before getting behind the wheel, taking the helm of a boat, or piloting any recreational vehicle while impaired.
The warning comes in the wake of a devastating boating tragedy on Lake Tahoe that left eight people dead after a sudden storm capsized a vessel near D.L. Bliss State Park on June 21, 2025.
According to sheriff’s investigators, boat operator Joshua Pickles and several others aboard the vessel reportedly stopped at the popular South Lake Tahoe restaurant Riva Grill before launching onto the lake. Investigators said the group purchased “two gallons of Wet Woody’s,” a signature rum-based frozen cocktail sold at the restaurant.
Hours later, a powerful microburst swept across Lake Tahoe, producing dangerous winds and steep waves that overturned the boat. Of the 10 people aboard, eight drowned. Investigators later reported that life jackets were found unused on the vessel.
The accident stunned the Tahoe Basin and reignited public discussion about boating safety, alcohol use on the water, and the responsibility of vessel operators during rapidly changing Sierra weather conditions.
“El Dorado County residents know how quickly conditions can change in the mountains and on our lakes,”
one regional boating safety official said in a public safety reminder issued ahead of the holiday weekend.
“Alcohol, rough water, and a lack of life jackets can become a deadly combination in minutes.”
Authorities emphasize that boating under the influence carries many of the same dangers as driving impaired. Alcohol slows reaction time, reduces judgment. On open water, sun exposure, wind, waves, and fatigue can intensify impairment even further.
California law requires children under 13 to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket while aboard a moving recreational vessel under 26 feet in length. Safety experts also strongly recommend that all passengers wear life jackets regardless of age, especially during unpredictable weather conditions common in the Sierra Nevada.
Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the beginning of the summer recreation season across El Dorado County, with increased traffic expected along U.S. Highway 50, local roads, Folsom Lake, Jenkinson Lake, and the Lake Tahoe Basin. Law enforcement agencies throughout California are expected to increase DUI patrols and boating safety enforcement during the holiday period.
Officials are encouraging residents to designate sober drivers, avoid operating boats after consuming alcohol, monitor weather conditions closely, and ensure every passenger has — and wears — a properly fitted life jacket.
For many local families, the Tahoe tragedy now stands as a sobering reminder that a holiday outing can turn catastrophic in a matter of moments.
