El Dorado Hills (May 7, 2024) – In the bucolic expanse of El Dorado County, nestled amidst the quietude of rural life, a spirited resistance is mounting against the encroachment of modernity in the form of a towering behemoth: a proposed 100 foot 5G Verizon cell phone tower.

Residents of this idyllic community, located in El Dorado Hills, were taken aback four months ago upon discovering plans for a gargantuan structure looming over their tranquil landscape. Standing defiantly against the prospect, David, a local resident, and his neighbors are voicing vehement opposition to what they perceive as an unsightly intrusion into their cherished vista.

“The tower itself will not fit the area. We are here, this is a rural area,” David contends, echoing the sentiment of many in his community who fear the disruption of their pastoral surroundings.

According to notices distributed by the Planning and Building Department of El Dorado County, the proposed Verizon tower would ascend to heights exceeding 100 feet, casting a looming shadow over the neighborhood. Besides aesthetic concerns, residents are apprehensive about potential health hazards posed by radio frequency emissions, particularly given the presence of children and animals who frolic freely in the vicinity.

Adding to the perplexity of the situation is the revelation that the area in question is already bathed in the embrace of 5G coverage, as indicated by Verizon’s own coverage map. Puzzled by the necessity of erecting a new tower in an ostensibly well-covered zone, residents question the rationale behind Verizon’s expansion plans.

“I have three bars of 5G right here on Malcolm Dixon Road. We just don’t see the need,” declares a resident, reflecting the bewilderment shared by many in the community.

Amidst the uproar, the specter of alternative solutions looms large. Suggestions to augment existing infrastructure rather than introducing a towering newcomer into the landscape have gained traction among dissenting voices. Proposals to extend the height of nearby towers, albeit on a smaller scale, are being touted as a compromise that would satisfy connectivity needs without despoiling the pastoral charm of the area.

As the debate rages on, the fate of Malcolm Dixon Road hangs in the balance, with residents fervently hoping that their appeals for preservation will not fall on deaf ears amidst the clamor for progress.
