PLACERVILLE, Calif. (March 4, 2026) — An elderly male motorist died Monday morning on U.S. Highway 50 near Ice House Road in the Riverton area of El Dorado County after suffering a medical emergency while driving, according to preliminary reports from the California Highway Patrol and emergency responders.

The incident was first reported at approximately 10:21 a.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 50. A passing motorist spotted a green Toyota RAV4 parked on the right-hand shoulder and an unresponsive man outside the vehicle. The driver’s identity has not been released pending family notification.

Bystanders and emergency personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, but the man later died at the scene. Authorities later clarified that there was no collision with another vehicle; instead, the episode appeared to stem from a sudden medical issue suffered by the driver while traveling on the freeway.

“The initial report came in as a potential traffic collision, but upon arrival, our investigation indicates this was a medical emergency, not a crash involving other vehicles,” a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said. CHP continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the man’s sudden illness.

Responding agencies included the California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire / CDF (Camino), which assisted with medical aid and scene management. Emergency responders frequently encounter calls where medical conditions mimic traffic collisions on high-speed roadways, underscoring both the unpredictability of health emergencies and the critical role first responders play.

The incident temporarily disrupted highway traffic, though no extended closures were reported. U.S. Highway 50 is a key east-west corridor through El Dorado County, linking local communities to Placerville and Sacramento and often seeing heavy commuter and recreational traffic.

Officials have not yet released specific information on the victim’s age or name. CHP asks any motorists who witnessed unusual driving behavior before the incident or who have video of the area around 10:20 a.m. Monday to contact the local patrol office.
