Placerville Murder Case Advances as Court Sets Summer Hearings

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A criminal case involving the death of a longtime Buckeye Elementary School teacher is moving forward in El Dorado County Superior Court as prosecutors prepare for a preliminary examination of evidence against her husband, who remains jailed on a first-degree murder charge.

Geoffrey Stewart Snyder, 57, was arrested Feb. 17, 2026, after El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence in the 1400 block of Big Oak Road south of Placerville following a report of a man brandishing a firearm. Deputies detained Snyder at the residence and discovered his wife, Shelley Snyder, 56, deceased inside the home from what investigators described as a suspected gunshot wound.

Snyder was booked into the El Dorado County Jail, where he remains held without bail. He later entered a not guilty plea to the first-degree murder charge during his arraignment in El Dorado County Superior Court.

Court Proceedings Scheduled in Placerville

The case is now scheduled for two significant court appearances at the Main Street Courthouse in Placerville.

Snyder is set to appear for a pre-preliminary hearing Friday, July 24, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. A full-day preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. in Department 2 before Judge Mark Ralphs.

During a preliminary hearing, prosecutors present evidence to determine whether sufficient probable cause exists for the defendant to stand trial. The proceeding does not decide guilt or innocence; instead, the judge evaluates whether the case should proceed through the criminal court process.

Community Remembers Beloved Educator

While the legal process moves forward, the community continues to mourn Shelley Snyder, whose death deeply affected families, educators and students throughout the Buckeye Union School District.

Snyder spent more than two decades teaching in the district and was most recently a third-grade teacher at Buckeye Elementary School in Shingle Springs. District officials described the loss as devastating for students, staff members and families who knew her.

“Our entire district is in shock — none more so than her co-workers and the families and students, past and present, who were part of her classroom,” the Buckeye Union School District said in a statement following her death.

The community response included memorial gatherings attended by parents, colleagues and former students honoring a teacher remembered for her dedication to children and education.

Shelley Snyder is survived by her two sons.

Investigation Continues

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive.

As the case proceeds through the courts, the upcoming August preliminary hearing is expected to provide the first formal courtroom review of evidence gathered by investigators.

For residents of El Dorado County, the case remains both a criminal proceeding and a community tragedy — one involving a respected local educator whose death left a lasting impact on the schools and families she served.
