El Dorado County (July 8, 2024) – El Dorado County has been placed on the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Risk Reduction List, one of only seven counties to receive this distinction. This recognition underscores the county’s adherence to best practices in local fire planning.

On June 19th, the Board of Forestry approved the 2024 Fire Risk Reduction Community List, which took effect on July 1st. Details of the resolution and the current list are available to the public.

“Placement on the Fire Risk Reduction List marks a significant accomplishment for El Dorado County and is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of our partner agencies and County departments, including staff from CAL FIRE, our local fire districts, the County’s Planning and Building Department, and our Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services,” said Tom Meyer, the County’s Office of Wildfire Preparedness and Resilience Program Manager.

Benefits for El Dorado County

  1. Insurance Discounts: Being designated as a Fire Risk Reduction Community is a crucial element in the California Insurance Commissioner’s Safer from Wildfires initiative. This designation, along with maintaining defensible space and other fire prevention measures, offers residents in unincorporated areas a chance to secure discounts on their homeowner’s insurance premiums.
  2. Priority for Grants: The county’s inclusion on this list also prioritizes it for certain Wildfire Prevention Grants, enhancing its ability to fund further fire prevention and preparedness projects.

Next Steps for Residents

Residents are encouraged to contact their homeowner’s insurance providers to explore the possibility of receiving discounts on their policies. For additional information or inquiries, the Office of Wildfire Preparedness and Resilience is available via email at wildfireready@edcgov.us or by phone at 530-621-5569.

El Dorado County’s recognition is a significant step forward in its ongoing efforts to mitigate wildfire risks and enhance community resilience.
