El Dorado County (Aug 29, 2024, 2024) — The Eldorado National Forest has released the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Caldor Fire Restoration Project, marking the start of a 30-day public comment period. This initiative is designed to address the extensive damage caused by the 2021 Caldor Fire and aims to reduce safety risks, rehabilitate forest features, and enhance resilience against future disturbances.

Eldorado Forest Supervisor Amy Reid emphasized the significance of the project:

“The publication of this environmental assessment is an important step in rebuilding our forest and communities from the impacts of the Caldor Fire. The proposed actions will help to reduce the threat of future uncharacteristic, large-scale wildfires like the Caldor while also restoring the ecological processes, habitat conditions, and access to recreation that are essential to the Eldorado National Forest.”

The 2021 Caldor Fire was a devastating event, burning 221,835 acres, with 170,057 acres on public lands managed by the Eldorado National Forest. The fire left behind extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including roads, trees, water sources, wildlife habitats, and recreational sites. To address these impacts, the restoration project proposes a range of treatments: mechanical fuel reduction, prescribed burns, reforestation, salvage harvest, invasive weed removal, watershed restoration, and infrastructure repair.

Due to the fire’s severity, certain recovery needs are urgent. The project’s first phase (Phase I) will expedite restoration actions using an emergency action determination to address immediate threats. This phase will undergo streamlined analysis, leading directly to a decision without an objection period. The second phase, known as the Maximum Extent Scenario, focuses on long-term landscape resilience and broader restoration needs; it will include an objection period before final decisions are made.

For detailed information and to access the Environmental Assessment and supporting documents, visit the project website here. The public is encouraged to participate in the comment period, which runs from August 28 to September 27, 2024. Comments can be submitted electronically via the Comment Analysis and Response Application (CARA).

Your input is crucial in shaping the future of the Eldorado National Forest.
