Coppola Leads Treasurer-Tax Collector Race as Nearly All El Dorado County Precincts Report

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Early election results indicate that Sean M. Coppola is on track to become El Dorado County’s next Treasurer-Tax Collector, holding a substantial lead over challenger Corey Leikauf as nearly all precincts have reported.

According to unofficial election results released Tuesday evening, 97 of the county’s 98 precincts had reported, representing 98.98% of precincts. Voter turnout stood at 30.14%, with 41,487 ballots cast out of 137,636 registered voters.

Coppola received 23,780 votes, accounting for 67.95% of ballots cast in the Treasurer-Tax Collector contest. Leikauf garnered 11,062 votes, or 31.61%. An additional 152 votes, representing 0.43%, were cast for write-in candidates.

A total of 34,994 votes were counted in the race.

The Treasurer-Tax Collector serves a critical role in county government, overseeing the collection of property taxes, safeguarding public funds, managing investments, and ensuring the financial integrity of county operations. While the office often receives less public attention than legislative or executive positions, it plays a central role in maintaining the county’s fiscal health.

With only one precinct remaining to report, Coppola’s lead of more than 12,700 votes appears difficult to overcome. However, election officials caution that all results remain unofficial until canvassing is completed and the election is certified.

“The results reported on election night are unofficial and subject to change as ballots continue to be processed and verified,”

election officials routinely remind voters during the post-election canvassing process.

The contest drew interest from voters concerned about fiscal accountability and stewardship of public resources, particularly as local governments across California continue to navigate economic uncertainty, inflationary pressures, and growing demands on public services.

Tuesday’s returns suggest that voters favored Coppola’s message and qualifications by a wide margin, giving him more than two-thirds of the vote in the countywide race.

Election officials are expected to continue updating results as outstanding ballots are reviewed and counted in accordance with California election law. Final certified results will be released following completion of the official canvass.
