For years, the story of a Placerville veteran’s service in Iraq has included a moment that began with an explosion and ended with gunfire.

Now, that service is receiving one of the U.S. military’s most recognizable honors.

Joshua Castro, a Placerville resident who served in the U.S. Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom, is scheduled to receive a Purple Heart for wounds sustained during a combat operation near Ramadi, Iraq.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded or killed as a result of enemy action. For Castro, the medal traces back to March 4, 2007, when he was conducting a combat patrol with Iraqi police and Iraqi Army personnel.

The patrol was traveling along an elevated canal road near Ramadi when the vehicle carrying Castro was struck by an improvised explosive device.

The blast knocked him down and, for a period, knocked him unconscious.

When Castro regained consciousness, the sounds around him had changed.

He awoke to the sound of a firefight.

The incident occurred during a particularly dangerous period of the Iraq War, when U.S. forces and their Iraqi partners were conducting combat and security operations throughout Anbar province. Ramadi, the provincial capital, had become a major battleground during the conflict.

For Castro, the experience was not simply another entry in a military record. It was an event that followed him home.

From an Iraq battlefield to El Dorado County

Today, Castro is part of the El Dorado County community and has remained connected to local veterans issues.

County records show Castro participating in the work of the El Dorado County Veterans Commission. In 2021, he presented a proposal involving enhancements to the Vietnam Veterans Bridge on Highway 50 in Placerville.

That local involvement gives his upcoming recognition particular significance for El Dorado County veterans and their families.

The story also illustrates how military service can remain part of a community long after a veteran leaves the battlefield.

Castro’s Army service has included more than the events surrounding his Purple Heart. A Department of Defense archive identifies him as a U.S. Army soldier from El Dorado Hills who was serving in Iraq in 2007.

His military career continued after the Ramadi incident. In 2015, Castro was part of a six-member Army scout squad from the 4th Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, that won the William J. Gainey Cup at Fort Benning, Georgia, earning recognition as the Army’s best scout squad. The Army identified Castro as one of the squad members in its account of the competition.

The achievement underscores the breadth of his military career — from combat in Iraq to succeeding at one of the Army’s premier scout competitions.

A medal with a long history

The Purple Heart dates to the earliest traditions of American military service and remains unique among U.S. decorations because it recognizes combat wounds or death resulting from enemy action.

For families and communities, the medal often carries a significance beyond the ribbon and medal itself. It represents the physical cost of military service and the circumstances under which a service member was injured.

In Castro’s case, that history reaches back to a roadside blast outside Ramadi nearly two decades ago.

The circumstances are stark: an elevated road, a patrol operating alongside Iraqi security forces, an IED strike, a moment of unconsciousness and then the sound of gunfire.

Now, a veteran of that firefight will stand before his community with the recognition he earned on the battlefield.

For Placerville and El Dorado County, Castro’s Purple Heart is more than a military decoration. It is a reminder that the county’s veterans carry histories of service that began thousands of miles away but remain part of the community they call home.

Sources: U.S. Army records and Department of Defense archival material provide independent confirmation of Castro’s military service and subsequent Army accomplishments. El Dorado County Veterans Commission records document Castro’s involvement in local veterans affairs. The account of the March 4, 2007, IED attack and forthcoming Purple Heart is based on the historical information supplied for this report.
