Kenneth George Burger, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, longtime hospital employee and devoted family patriarch whose life stretched from Chicago to Northern Nevada and ultimately El Dorado County, died peacefully in his favorite recliner on Oct. 5, 2026, at his Placerville home. He was 85.

To those closest to him, he was Dad, Pops, Papa and Gramps. But above all, he was a family man whose greatest accomplishments were measured not in years worked or places lived, but in the generations of family he helped bring together.

Born March 27, 1941, in Chicago, Burger was adopted at a young age by George Joseph and Mae Grace (Curran) Burger. His mother died when he was 12, leaving his father to raise him. He attended St. Timothy Catholic School in Chicago.

At 17, in 1958, Burger joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Because he was not yet old enough to enlist independently, his father signed the necessary paperwork.

While stationed in Hawaii, he worked as an equipment operator and earned the Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter Badge. He received an honorable discharge in May 1961 and returned to Chicago, where he worked as a vending machine mechanic.

A journey from Chicago to the quiet life of Nevada

Burger married Mary Carolyn Hubbard, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Charlyn, in 1962. He later married Pam Meinhart, and they welcomed another daughter, Laura, in 1973.

The next chapter of his life began with a newspaper advertisement offering free flights to Elko, Nevada. The promotion was intended to attract prospective buyers to Spring Creek, a developing community outside Elko.

Curious about the opportunity, Burger boarded a Casino Express flight to see the area for himself. He envisioned it as a quiet place where he could eventually retire, away from the noise and pace of city life.

He purchased land and returned to Chicago. But the prospect of waiting until retirement proved too long. In 1975, he packed up his family and moved to Spring Creek to begin the quieter life he had imagined.

He initially worked for Bodily’s Furniture before taking a position in 1978 as a boiler engineer at Elko General Hospital. He remained there for the next 30 years, retiring in 2008.

It was also at the hospital that Burger met Claudia, a nurse who would become the love of his life.

The two married on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1983, and shared 42 years together before Claudia’s death in May 2025.

Their marriage brought together a growing family, including Burger’s daughters and Claudia’s three daughters and son. Over the years, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren expanded the family they built together.

In 2010, Ken and Claudia relocated to Placerville, seeking milder weather and an opportunity to live closer to Claudia’s family in the area.

A man happiest among family

Those who knew Burger remember a strong-willed man whose affection for his family never wavered.

He could often be found watching his beloved Chicago Bears with a cold beer nearby and one of his dogs resting in his lap or following close behind.

His interests reflected his practical nature and willingness to tackle just about anything. He enjoyed camping, billiards, golf, masonry, gardening and woodworking — earning a reputation as a true jack of all trades.

In Spring Creek, his home became recognizable for its large, mature trees and a garden that produced plenty of tomatoes. He also devoted time to volunteering at the Presbyterian Church in Elko.

But his greatest satisfaction came from the family life he and Claudia created.

Family camping trips to Lamoille Canyon became treasured memories. He passed along his woodworking skills to his grandchildren, building handmade toys for them in his shop. At family barbecues, he could often be found tending the grill, surrounded by the people who mattered most.

Whether teaching a grandchild a new skill, sharing time outdoors or simply enjoying the lively commotion of a large family gathering, Burger found happiness in being together.

His family described him as a man whose love, lessons and presence would continue to shape the lives of those he leaves behind.

A family legacy that continues

Burger was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia; his parents, George and Mae; and his stepdaughter, Billie Dawn.

He is survived by his daughters, Charlyn and Laura, and his stepchildren, Scherrie, Kimberly and Kenny, whom he loved as his own. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will remember him as Papa and Gramps.

His passing comes after the loss of Claudia in May 2025. For the family, there is comfort in the thought that the couple who shared more than four decades together will once again be reunited.

The family expressed gratitude for the blessings, lessons and love Burger shared throughout his life, even as they mourn the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

In keeping with the wishes Ken and Claudia shared, their ashes will be scattered together in Lamoille Canyon, their favorite place to spend time together.

It is a fitting final destination for a couple whose story began with a shared life and will be remembered through the family they built.

For those who called him Dad, Pops, Papa or Gramps, Kenneth George Burger’s legacy will live on in the stories told around family tables, the skills passed down to grandchildren, the memories of camping trips and the love that brought generations together.
