PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Community safety report
A driver traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 near Placerville reported a disturbing early-morning encounter with a gray hatchback that allegedly tailgated their vehicle through multiple lane changes before following them off the freeway near Camino Heights Drive.
The encounter reportedly occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, according to the account provided for this report. The driver had two children, ages 12 and 9, in the vehicle.
Driver reports aggressive maneuvers near Placerville
The driver said the incident began near the intersections of String Street and Canal Street, where the gray hatchback — possibly a Honda Fit — allegedly weaved through traffic and came unusually close to vehicles it passed.
The driver later caught up with the hatchback on eastbound Highway 50, describing it as traveling in the right lane below the speed limit.
According to the account, the hatchback accelerated after the driver passed and began following extremely closely. The driver said the vehicle was so near that its headlights were no longer visible in the rearview mirror.
Concerned that even light braking could cause a collision, the driver activated a turn signal and moved over to allow the hatchback to pass. The other motorist allegedly remained close behind.
The driver said they moved back into the passing lane and then returned to the right lane, but the hatchback followed both maneuvers.
Encounter continued off Highway 50
The situation became more unsettling when the driver exited near Camino Heights Drive and noticed that the hatchback had also left the freeway.
The driver reported that the hatchback eventually pulled into a nearby gas station parking lot. After stopping briefly to observe what the other motorist would do, the driver watched the vehicle turn around and return to the freeway in the direction of Placerville.
The driver said they had not interacted with the motorist before the encounter and could identify no obvious reason for the apparent aggression.
No license plate number was obtained, and the driver said they could not get a sufficiently clear look at the person behind the wheel. The vehicle was described as a gray hatchback, possibly a Honda Fit.
Children left shaken by the encounter
The driver said both children were rattled by the experience. The account did not report a collision or physical injuries.
Without a license plate, a confirmed vehicle make and model, or a clear description of the driver, identifying the other motorist could be difficult. The reported sequence of close following, repeated lane changes and the apparent decision to take the same exit nevertheless raises a practical safety concern for motorists traveling through the Highway 50 corridor.
The incident remains an unverified account. No independent witness statements, law enforcement confirmation or official incident number were provided for this article. It is not known whether the California Highway Patrol received a report.
What drivers should do if they encounter aggressive driving
The California Highway Patrol advises motorists who observe dangerous driving to maintain a safe distance and report the vehicle. If a passenger is present, that person can call 911 and provide the location, direction of travel and vehicle description. Drivers should prioritize safety and avoid confronting the other motorist.
For a motorist who believes they are being followed, practical precautions include:
-
Avoid brake-checking, retaliatory driving or attempting to confront the other driver.
-
Keep doors locked and maintain enough space to maneuver safely.
-
If possible, avoid driving home or stopping in an isolated location; consider proceeding to a safe, populated place.
-
Call 911 if the behavior presents an immediate danger, giving dispatchers the highway location, direction of travel and vehicle description.
-
If safe to do so after the incident, record additional details and report the encounter to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP lists 911 for emergencies involving unsafe drivers and provides nonemergency contact information and local office details on its chp.ca.gov .
The driver’s closing message to other motorists was simple: be careful, stay alert and give aggressive drivers plenty of distance.

Anyone with firsthand information about the incident should contact law enforcement rather than attempt to identify or confront a suspected driver publicly.
