SOMERSET — A rural El Dorado County bridge has been closed indefinitely after engineers identified potential structural problems during an inspection Thursday, disrupting a local route near the North Fork Cosumnes River.
The Happy Valley Cutoff Bridge is closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic while the county evaluates the structure and determines what repairs may be necessary.
The closure follows a routine inspection conducted Aug. 20 by structural engineers and the El Dorado County Department of Transportation. Field observations identified potential erosion near the bridge supports as well as a section of the adjacent roadway where the roadbed has slid away.

The county has not provided an estimated reopening date.

Drivers using Sweeney Road should pay particular attention to vehicle size. Vehicles longer than 30 feet are advised not to use Sweeney Road because of its size and navigation limitations.

The closure comes in a part of El Dorado County where road access can be limited by the terrain and the area’s winding, narrow routes. The Happy Valley and Mount Aukum roads have also been used as critical alternate routes during previous emergencies, including the June 2026 Happy Fire, when portions of Mount Aukum Road were temporarily closed during firefighting and evacuation operations.
River access remains available
The bridge itself is off limits, but recreational access has not been completely eliminated.
The vehicle pullout areas on both sides of the bridge remain open for people who want to park and access the river for recreation. Visitors should not attempt to cross the closed bridge on foot or by vehicle.
