POLLOCK PINES — Two Dogs Safe After US-50 Rescue
Two dogs wandering near U.S. Highway 50 and Ridgeway Drive in Pollock Pines got a lucky break when Officer Whitley and Caltrans crews came across them and stepped in.
The dogs were found along the busy highway corridor, where traffic regularly moves through Pollock Pines toward the Sierra. Rather than leaving the animals exposed to passing vehicles, the responding officer and highway workers worked together to get them to safety.
They’re safe, sound and now in good hands.
That was the good-news update accompanying the report of the rescue.
The Ridgeway Drive area is near the eastern portion of Pollock Pines, where US-50 remains a critical transportation route for residents, commuters and travelers heading toward the Sierra. Caltrans has ongoing responsibility for maintaining the highway, including roadway safety and infrastructure in the area.
For motorists, loose animals near a high-speed roadway can create a danger for everyone involved. Drivers may suddenly brake or swerve to avoid an animal, potentially creating a secondary collision.
In this case, however, the story ended with the outcome everyone wants to see: two dogs off the highway and out of harm’s way.
The incident also serves as a reminder for Pollock Pines residents to keep an eye on pets and make sure dogs have secure fencing, identification and current contact information. When an animal does get loose near US-50, motorists should avoid attempting a dangerous roadside rescue themselves and instead contact authorities or animal-control personnel when possible.
A Small Rescue With a Big Local Impact
There are plenty of serious calls along El Dorado County’s highways. Every once in a while, a roadside response produces something different — no crime scene, no wreckage and no tragedy.
Just two dogs that needed somebody to stop.
This time, Officer Whitley and Caltrans crews did exactly that.
And for two four-legged travelers in Pollock Pines, that’s a pretty good day.
