Youth-Led Empty Bowls Dinner: A Feast of Compassion on April 6th

El Dorado County (March 10, 2024) –  In its 24th annual iteration, the Empty Bowls Dinner is gearing up to make a significant impact in the fight against hunger. Hosted by the dynamic youth participants of Hands4Hope – Youth Making A Difference, this year’s event promises an evening of humble dining and fundraising fervor. Scheduled for Saturday, April 6, from 4 to 7 pm, the Placerville Shakespeare Club will be the backdrop for this charitable feast.

Empty Bowls is a nationwide initiative to combat hunger, renowned for its distinctive touch—every attendee walks away with a unique handmade bowl, a tangible reminder of their contribution to the cause. Local students and artists generously donate these bowls, making each one a cherished work of art. Adding to the ambiance, live music by Coloma Celtic will fill the air, and socially conscious vendors like Global Good, Noble Ventures, and Days for Girls will be on hand.

All proceeds from this event will bolster the Upper Room Dining Hall in Placerville, which served an impressive 66,878 meals last year. The aim is to extend services further by introducing a mobile food truck, ensuring accessibility for those unable to reach the dining hall. This mobile capability would also be a crucial asset in emergencies, such as the recent Caldor Fire. Another local beneficiary is the Hands4Hope – Youth Making A Difference Emergency Food Pantry in Placerville, providing nourishment to those in need within the community. On the international front, Earth Angels in Ghana will receive support to establish a self-sustainable fish farm, addressing hunger on a grand scale.

A notable shift occurred this year in event leadership. The torch passed from the El Dorado Peace and Justice Community, who led for 23 years, to the youth-led Hands4Hope committee. Comprising 12 high school-age leaders, this committee is taking charge of all event facets, from coordinating donations to managing marketing, finance, and operations. Their efforts are bolstered by the guidance of a volunteer Adult Mentor, a Hands4Hope Intern, and a dedicated Hands4Hope staff member.

Time is of the essence for those interested in joining this meaningful cause. Tickets and sponsorships are available now and are in high demand. Presale tickets are priced at $20, $25 at the door (if available), with discounts for students and free entry for young children. Sponsorships start at $100 and include event tickets.
