Just when it felt like summer was knocking on the door, the weather is reminding El Dorado County residents that spring still holds the reins.

A warm, partly sunny Monday afternoon with highs near 70 degrees will give way to increasing clouds and a chance of light rain overnight, according to the National Weather Service. By early Tuesday, a stronger system moves in, bringing widespread rain, falling temperatures, and the potential for afternoon thunderstorms.

Forecasters say Tuesday will mark the sharpest shift, with temperatures dropping to the low 50s by morning and precipitation chances climbing to 90 percent. Periods of steady rain are expected throughout the day, with embedded thunderstorms capable of producing brief heavier downpours.

“Spring in the Sierra often delivers rapid swings between warm sunshine and unsettled weather,” the weather service noted in its latest forecast discussion. “Residents should be prepared for changing conditions, including isolated thunderstorms midweek.”

Rain continues Tuesday night into Wednesday, with another round of showers and possible thunderstorms. Daytime highs will struggle to reach 50 degrees, nearly 20 degrees cooler than earlier in the week. Overnight lows dip into the low 40s, keeping conditions damp and chilly across higher elevations east-southeast of Placerville.

By Thursday, the system begins to taper off, with lingering morning rain followed by partial clearing and highs in the low 50s. The turnaround becomes more pronounced heading into Friday, when sunny skies return and temperatures rebound into the mid-60s.

The weekend offers a full return to fair weather, with clear skies and highs climbing back into the low 70s by Sunday—more in line with early summer expectations but still firmly within spring’s variable nature.

The pattern underscores a familiar truth for foothill communities: spring is a season of contrasts. Warm afternoons can quickly уступ to stormy skies, and the transition from sunshine to rain—and back again—can unfold in a matter of days.

Extended Forecast (High Foothills ESE Placerville Area)

  • Monday Afternoon: Partly sunny, high near 70
  • Monday Night: Chance of rain, low around 50
  • Tuesday–Wednesday: Rain, thunderstorms likely, highs near 50
  • Thursday: Morning rain, gradual clearing, high near 52
  • Friday–Sunday: Sunny and warmer, highs 65–72
