Ponderosa graduate, Coast Guard pilot killed in Washington State shooting

SHINGLE SPRINGS, Calif. — A Ponderosa High School graduate who left El Dorado County for a career flying helicopters for the U.S. Coast Guard was killed in a late-night shooting south of Seattle, leaving family, former classmates and communities on both sides of the country demanding answers.

Lt. Connor Scott Overstreet, 29, was fatally shot shortly after midnight Aug. 23 in the Bryn Mawr-Skyway area of King County, Washington. Deputies were dispatched at about 12:40 a.m. to the area of South 124th Street and South Langston Road after reports of a shooting.

Emergency responders found Overstreet in the roadway and attempted lifesaving measures. He died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities are investigating the death as a homicide.

Overstreet was an active-duty Coast Guard aviator stationed at Coast Guard Air Station Ventura in Southern California. He had traveled to the Seattle area for military training when he was killed, according to reports.

For residents of El Dorado County, the name carries a more familiar connection.

Overstreet was a member of the Ponderosa High School Class of 2015 in Shingle Springs. His path from the foothills of El Dorado County to the cockpit of a Coast Guard helicopter ultimately took him across the country, but his roots remained here.

The Coast Guard confirmed his death in a statement to media.

“The Coast Guard is deeply saddened to confirm the death of LT Connor Overstreet.”

The service extended condolences to Overstreet’s family, friends and fellow Coast Guard members following his death.

Detectives seek neighborhood video

The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking residents in the Skyway area to look at a source of evidence that could prove critical: privately recorded video.

King County Major Crimes detectives have asked residents, motorists and businesses to review surveillance and dashcam footage recorded between approximately 12:30 and 1:15 a.m. Aug. 23.

That window could contain the movements of a vehicle or person connected to the shooting.

FOX 13 Seattle reported that detectives have been canvassing the area around South 124th Street and South Langston Road while seeking video and other leads. No suspect had been publicly identified or arrested in the case.

The circumstances have been described in some reports as a random shooting or drive-by attack. Investigators, however, have publicly established the case as a homicide and have not announced a motive or identified a suspect.

That distinction matters as the investigation continues.

$30,000 reward offered

The search for answers has now come with a substantial financial incentive.

Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound initially contributed $1,000 toward a reward. Overstreet’s family subsequently added $29,000, bringing the total reward to $30,000 for information leading to an arrest and charge in the killing.

The family established the Connor S. Overstreet Justice and Support Fund to help support the investigation and provide financial assistance following the loss.

The verified fundraising campaign was showing more than $88,000 raised from hundreds of donations as of Sept. 4. The campaign says the money raised will primarily support a reward intended to generate information that helps identify and prosecute those responsible. Some funds may also help with the family’s expenses, with any remaining money intended for a charity Connor would have supported.

The campaign has become another measure of the reach of Overstreet’s life. Donations have come from people rallying around a Coast Guard officer they knew personally, a military aviator they respected or simply a young man whose life was abruptly taken.

From Shingle Springs to the Coast Guard

For those who knew Overstreet as a Ponderosa student, the military uniform was the continuation of a path that began in the foothills.

He graduated from Ponderosa High School in 2015 and went on to become a Coast Guard officer and helicopter pilot. At the time of his death, he was assigned to Air Station Ventura.

The Coast Guard’s aviation missions include search-and-rescue operations and other demanding work where crews can be called upon to respond when others are in distress.

Now, his fellow service members are mourning one of their own.

His remains were returned to Coast Guard Air Station Ventura on Aug. 28 with full military honors, according to published reports.

For the Overstreet family, however, the military ceremony could not answer the question that remains.

Who pulled the trigger?

Family asks for answers

Overstreet’s wife, Madeleine, has joined the family’s appeal for information and justice.

The family’s decision to put $29,000 toward the reward underscores the urgency surrounding an investigation that, nearly two weeks after the shooting, still has no publicly identified suspect.

The appeal is straightforward: Someone may have seen something.

A neighbor may have captured a passing vehicle on a security camera. A driver may have had a dashcam running. A business camera may have recorded activity in the area during the critical 45-minute window.

Any of those pieces could help detectives reconstruct what happened.

For a family in Southern California and a community in Northern California that knew Overstreet before his Coast Guard career, the geography of the case is stark.

He grew up in the foothills.

He served his country from the air.

He was in Washington for military work.

And in the early morning darkness of Aug. 23, his life ended on a residential roadway nearly 800 miles from the community where he attended high school.

The investigation now depends, in part, on someone coming forward.

Information that could help identify the person responsible can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound at 1-800-222-TIPS or through the P3 Tips app. The current reward is $30,000 for information leading to an arrest and charge.

For El Dorado County, the death is more than another distant headline.

Connor Overstreet was one of its own.
